A man accused of firing a weapon from a vehicle was shot and wounded Monday by California police, who opened fire when the suspect pointed his gun at officers working to de-escalate the situation.
The incident began at about 8:15 p.m. when Oxnard police received a report about someone firing shots from a vehicle, the Ventura County Star reports. Police at the scene spotted a man matching the suspect's description and ordered him to surrender.
The suspect refused to comply with the officers' orders, and they continued to try to de-escalate the incident. A standoff ensued as the man moved back and forth between an apartment and a car, which is where police originally located him.
During the standoff, the suspect pointed his guns, and two officers opened fire. The suspect was shot and wounded, and a witness captured video footage of the incident.
Initially, the suspect went back inside the apartment after being shot. But he eventually surrendered and was taken to the hospital, where he was in stable condition.
The shooting is under investigation, and the officers who fired shots are on administrative leaves during that time, per department policy. Charges are pending against the suspect.
